I’ve been doing a lot of talk just lately about feeling inspired and in the mood to create, but I haven’t really expanded beyond that. As you may well know, I love mood boards and putting what’s inspiring me directly in front of me. I probably picked this up from doing art all the time in school and then going on to study fashion, which required so many mood boards, but I love making them when I’m inspired to keep myself consistent, so I’m seeing this write up as a simplified moodboard and also perhaps, you can find creative inspiration in it too?
As always, I do have a bit of backstory to get into first. I was feeling very uninspired during the latter half of last year and at the start of this year, I had commented on it to people around me that I felt sad that there was nothing for me to get into or feel connected with to use on a creative basis, I think the main person I shared this with didn’t quite get where I was coming from, because I think this is just a creative struggle, because when I told other creatives of this feeling the general response was: HARD RELATE.
I think that we all have dry spells where we’re just not in the zone to create things or feel inspired and connected to anything, which is okay but it does mean that these periods reflect harshly on our self love and happiness. So to feel inspired again, well it’s euphoric, I definitely feel like I’m on a high and it feels good to have ideas for things again.
1 – SCI FI THEMES
This one is actually unusual for me, I was never the kid that was into sci-fi or anything like that, I enjoyed nerdy things but not to the extent of going out of my way to seek sci-fi as a source of inspiration.
Well, lately I’m really into sci-fi themes and it’s affected my creative flow in a positive way, I’ve got a few secret boards on Pinterest for what’s inspiring me at any given time and my sci-fi board is full of imagery and ideas. In particular, I really like cyber sci-fi.
I specifically really like cyber punk and robotics at the minute, I’ve been referring to the art style from the Ghost in the Shell anime a lot for ideas and ideal colour palettes because it was just so pretty for its time and aged really well.
2 – THE COLOUR PURPLE
Yeah this one is a bit obvious given the fact that I’ve been theming a lot of my Instagram stories around the colour, I dyed my hair kinda purple and my photos have also gone down a fairly purple route lately too. I just really like it and I think it looks really spacey and cool, as far as my personal artwork and photography goes, purple has been playing a huge part in my work. Obviously it can’t affect my writing too much but my visual work is very purple at the minute.
3 – ANIME
Well that’s a word we don’t dare utter on this site anymore. Yeah, I don’t know what happened to me last year but I lost total interest in anime and just stopped watching it, this year though I’ve picked a few shows back up and have found myself really enjoying anime again, even feeling inspired by it. I love particular colour palets and aesthetics; particularly from shows like Psycho Pass, Deadman Wonderland etc.
4 – ART
Art has definitely always played a part in what inspires me but lately I’ve been very interested in different styles of painting which has been playing a small role in my every day life as well as my creative work. I’ve always found renaissance paintings to be an influence on the style that I’d like to achieve as well as art work that has been created on modern devices such as tablets; I love art work with a fantasy flare.
5 – MY CREATIVE SPACE
I’ll stop talking about my office when it’s no longer shiny and new (haha), but seriously, having a space that’s just for working in has really gotten my creative juices flowing. I think not sitting at my coffee table watching Netflix whilst I work has benefitted me big time as far as productivity and idea flow goes. I’m forced to focus and get work done and create ideas when I’m in my office and that’s the only time I’ll sit at my desk because that’s the sole purpose of it. I definitely feel like I manage my time better too, I don’t want to sit at the desk all day so I have a set amount of time for when I work and when I relax; it’s inspiring me because it has to, which works for me.
- TikTok – The app has been surprisingly motivational for me with fellow creatives also using it to share their ideas and challenges
- Pinterest – As always, pinterest is a stream of inspiration for me – I love moodboards.
- Writing in a notebook – This has been a surprising revelation but having a notebook and jotting things down keeps me motivated and organised
So there you have it, the things inspiring me lately! I hope that my flow of inspiration continues and that it doesn’t die out any time soon, I often find myself in creative ruts because I have so many ideas and I find it hard to execute them so having inspiration and places to search for inspiration always helps me with gathering myself and organising what I need to do in order to achieve what I’m hoping to create better.
I’d also love to know if you have any creative inspo at the minute and what it is – do we share any sources?
