Don’t you just hate it when your cupboard fills up and you’ve run out of space or things are constantly falling on top of you? Well, this is a problem that I’ve never had to face. My family home was – and still is a seriously organised space because that’s just the type of people my parents are, so over the years of living with them, specifically my mum, I picked up a lot of tips and tricks and when I began saving up to move out and making purchases – cupboard storage was one of my priorities.
This method of being super-organised and everything having a place flows throughout my home, I like to make things convenient and I like everything having a space. We have one drawer at the minute in the side table which is in serious need of some caring for, but besides that I’ve taken everything I’ve learned over the years on board.
So in this post I want to show you some of the ways I’ve kept my kitchen cupboard organised. We have super limited space, with only one cupboard being fit for food storage so I’ve tried to utilize the most out of this space, but I’ll also be sharing some tips that you can take on board which I cannot due to my lack of space.
Before & After
Baskets are your new best friend
Something that is totally inexpensive and you can literally buy everywhere is baskets. Because I was unsure of how much space we actually had (I have the worst memory) I decided I’d buy two little baskets for my food cupboard and I’d figure the rest out. Well, this obviously wasn’t very helpful because even with these two baskets we ended up in a position where things were being put on top of each other, falling out and were pretty much homeless in my cupboard.
So I went out and bought two more boxes and a spice rack, because of the height of my cupboards and the fact that I’m short this is as far as I can go, but pictured below is my glass/cups cupboard and we have a little shelf which I bought from Savers to get some more space, I also think this would look terrific in your cupboard for storing cans and tins.
I’d like to get some jars for our spaghetti and pasta though because these seem to be the only things that don’t have a place in the cupboard that’s a bit more organised, so I’m definitely looking into getting some jars.
Anyway, I’ve organised my baskets by contents like so:
Top Left Basket
In this basket I like to store sauces and pasta ingredients such as bologna sauce, pasta sauce and mayonnaise, these jars tend to be quite big and take up a lot of space so when they’re not organised and sectioned it can be quite easy for them to become unsightly. I’ve also organised by what we use the most being at the front and what we use the least being at the back.
Top Right Basket
Inside this basket I’ve decided to put my tins in here, so my beans and tinned vegetables are safely stored away inside this basket, also meaning that it’s convenient when we want meals with either beans or vegetables because everything is kept in one box, it’s easy to pull the box out without disturbing the order of things to easily grab what we need.
Bottom Left Basket
The bottom baskets are a little bit less themed because these are holding our more essential goods and also things such as tea bags that didn’t fit inside the tea caddy, but inside they hold spices that are too tall for our rack, tea bags that we can’t fit inside the caddy, marshmallows for our hot chocolates and sugar. The left basket holds these things and it fits nicely directly under our spice rack.
Bottom Right Basket
The right basket has a bit more of a purpose because inside that we keep hot chocolate and things that we can use for hot drinks, there’s also some cooking oil in this basket that we couldn’t fit anywhere else but things having a place and knowing where to find everything makes going through your cupboards that much easier.
The Spice Rack
This spice rack is a life saver and frees up so much space, as I said, the spices were taking up loads of space in the basket and this was the cause of most of the piling, this is also a two-tier rack but you can have it as a one-tier rack if you prefer, which I do since we don’t have the space for it to be two-tier. I keep all of the spices along this and it’s made keeping the cupboard organised a lot easier, this was a nice Amazon find and really does the job.
The Pantry Cupboard
I call this the pantry cupboard because it’s basically where we keep all of our sweeties and of course our crisps. It’s also where I keep bread and massive bottles of pop. Obviously we’re limited with cupboard space so I’m very grateful for this long cupboard.
So you’ll obviously need more baskets! I hate having crisp bags floating around, I think it just looks really bad and it’s a sure fire way to create an untidy cupboard, so I always empty out the crisps packets and organise them into a large basket that I bought out of Waitrose.
This also means that it’s easy to just grab what you want instead of faffing around in the bag looking for your favourite flavour. I tend to organise them by standing them but there have been times where I’ve over bought crisps and we’ve had to stack them, we’re never really short on crisps and we like to keep the box full enough.
As for the sweeties, I don’t remember where I got the basket from but I really like it, it’s the perfect size for making sure that I’m not tempted to buy loads and it stores enough sweets to last a few weeks. I keep these two baskets next to each other for convenience.
The Bread Bin
I like to keep my bread bin on the shelf above next to the chopping board and sometimes those giant 2L pepsi bottles, but I don’t actually love the size of my bread bin because it doesn’t hold many loaves and takes up a lot of space considering how small the inside of it is, but it’s still convenient to have because we can fit crumpets and wraps around the one loaf of bread as well. I’d rather get a basket that has a lid for the bread to keep it fresh and to make sure we can get more than one loaf which we always use up really quickly.
I keep this space fairly organised because it’s difficult to mess it up but keeping all of these baskets around is so useful and really helps us to keep things organised and prevents us from constantly needing to reorganise and tidy up the cupboards.
