Have you ever been somewhere, and when you’re there, it just feels so right? You feel at home, comfortable and safe. If you’ve been reading here for a while then by know you’ll know that the place that I’m thinking of, is Lisbon. When I am there the world feels right, I feel happy and the feeling of being back, is only one I can describe as euphoric. Which is why I’ve made a conscious effort to keep myself reminded of the city and my feelings for it through my homeware; I have posters up on my walls, my scrapbook is mostly Lisbon memorabilia and now: I have an ethical cushion which sits politely on my bed serving as a beautiful reminder of my home away from home.
As you know, lately I’ve been trying to be more ethical, whether it’s from the simple changes such as trading in a plastic straw for a metal one, shopping less and shopping smarter, or in this case: by introducing ethical products into my homeware choices, to me, I feel like it’s only right, and also very easy, to make small yet significant changes.
Maglen Designs are a family-run design company, I felt a strong connection to them when I read about their passion for their home country, Australia and their home away from home, Portugal. I related to their story and immediately felt like this was a brand that I felt comfortable with, their designs are both quirky and simple depending on what you’re going for and you can feel a story from every single design.
For me, I have the Dinner Ladies cushion, it’s a design which carefully combines 18th century Portuguese tiles with native Australian plants; this cushion to me, tells the story of the owners’ love of their homes, it reminds me of my love of my second home, and it fits in perfectly with my own home too.
The colour scheme on this cushion is my favourite part; the blue hue is reminiscent of tiles that you see throughout Portugal which is both nostalgic and comfortable, although I have never been to Australia, the combination of the flowers creates a beautiful touch, a splash of elegance.
This pillow is incredibly versatile and easy to style too, I had tried it in many different spots in my room from my bed to my ottoman, I can also see it sat comfortably on my sofa when I get my flat. These easy reminders of Portugal are what will make my home feel like home.
But what really makes Maglen Designs stand out?
You can feel their love of what they do; I’ve spoken a lot about my cushion but they don’t just stop there. From towels to bags and even deckchairs, their store is full of products which feature their wonderful designs; outside of my Dinner Ladies cushion, I love the look of the Blue Pedro Bag which features a beautiful botanic design.
Their towels have the simplest designs out of their entire collection; either sporting solid colours or simple lines, I really like these but would also love to see them try printing their beautiful botanic or Portuguese/Australian inspired prints on a towel, or even a beach towel, as I think these would really stand out and work well.
To find such a strong connection with a brand or even a designer is very special, I relate to their story and feel their love of what they do; each design is honestly, right up my street as well, fitting in with the vibe of the homeware I’ve purchased as well as my current bedroom.
I will definitely be purchasing some more goods from Maglen Designs, their story has touched me and their designs are some of the best that I’ve seen around lately, fitting right in with the atmosphere of my home and the comfort of what I’m aiming for.
If you love the look of this cushion as much as I love it, you can buy it here for $60 – it’s so worth it and I really hope that you love them as much as I do!
So tell me, what do you think?
