Self care is something that should be a priority in all of our lives, and in one way or another, we do subconsciously have self care routines or methods. Obviously though, self care isn’t something that is just limited to our appearance, it can be to do with anything that affects how we feel mentally, and yeah okay, physically.

What exactly is self care?

“These are our daily activities in looking after ourselves. The process of looking after one’s self. Avoiding all threats and issues that may make a person face irritable and uncomfortable circumstances.” – Psychology Dictionary

What does self care mean to me?

Self care to me is all about making myself feel good. Whether it’s knowing I ate enough today or I watched an episode of my favourite TV show. I do think about my happiness a lot, I like to do the things that make me happy whether it’s first thing in the morning because I know that it’ll affect the rest of my day, or whether it’s late at night, because I know that I’ll go to sleep happy.

I also feel like giving myself what I call “happy stress” counts as self care, I actually see my blog as something that gives me happy stress. Knowing that I’m due to get next months posts written, or that my hosting site could potentially miss an upload schedule (it’s happened), keeps me on my toes a little bit and applies “happy stress” – which is nice versus the everyday stress of life, especially on those days when you’re really feeling it.

So what can we do for self care?

  • Turn off your phone for a couple hours
  • Talk to a loved one
  • Eat your favourite food
  • Have a pamper evening
  • Watch some crappy reality TV
  • Put your favourite makeup on your face…
  • …Then take it all off
  • Treat Yo Self
  • Or sort your wardrobe out and donate something to charity

You’re obviously not limited to these things, there’s probably millions of things you could go out and try without my say so – you’ve probably even already thought of something reading through that little list.

Definitely make a habit of being conscious about self care though, when life gets on top of us, we can have a habit of forgetting to do the basic things that keep our minds happy, or at least, that keep us feeling like our normal selves. Whether you spend ten minutes at night time doing something, it can make all of the difference to your overall mood, and the best part is: It’s not a chore.

What do I like to do for self care?

  • Take a hot shower
  • Watch a movie
  • Talk to my loved ones
  • Put makeup on with some music in the background
  • Listen to a podcast to keep my brain awake
  • Put a face mask on – one of those peel off ones. Super satisfying.
  • Write – it keeps my brain occupied and happy!

Self care is one of the most important things in our day to day lives, it’s important to take it seriously and reduce your stress and give yourself a little “me” time. I definitely get to take advantage of being able to give myself quite a lot of “me” time, and it really does make a difference.
